Anaheim has partnered with Be Well OC to launch a one-year pilot program to provide mental health resources to Anaheim residents who are struggling.
The program is set to launch in early 2022with the goal of providing the Anaheim community with additional mental health support while also freeing up police resources for public safety issues.
The Hope Mobile Response Team, made up of two mental health clinicians, will be on call for situations where someone needs mental health help. While the team would work in coordination with and support our homeless outreach teams, its services would be available in any situation where mental health experts would be beneficial.
Anaheim Police responds to about 5,000 calls a year for mental health service.
While officers do a great job at keeping our community safe, there are situations when a uniformed officer may not be the most effective person to help someone in mental health crisis.
That's where the Hope Team comes in. The team will respond with officers to appropriate situations and, in certain instances, could respond without police.
In addition to offering the proper support and effective help for those struggling, the program will also help us use our public safety resources more efficiently.
